A cervical screening (smear test) is one of the best ways to help prevent cervical cancer. The test checks for high-risk HPV (human papillomavirus) and, if needed, looks for changes in the cells of the cervix before they become cancerous.

The appointment usually takes around 10 minutes and is carried out by a trained female healthcare professional. Most people find it quick and straightforward.

You may be invited for cervical screening if you:

• Are aged 25 to 64.
• Have a cervix.

If you've received an invitation, please don't ignore it—even if you feel well. Cervical screening is for people without symptoms and can help detect changes early, when they are easiest to treat.

If you're feeling nervous or have had a previous difficult experience, please let us know. We can offer a longer appointment, answer any questions you may have, and do everything we can to make you feel comfortable.
